Things Clients Notice that You Don't | Sales Tips

A couple of weeks ago, we talked about traits of top performers and I mentioned that curiosity, creativity, persistence, and discipline were some of the key traits.  The other things that I noticed about top performers is that they have confidence and they have energy.  How does this manifest itself in front of a client?

Top sales performers are always professionally dressed. You don't have to look like you walked off the set of Suits,  but your clothing should be clean. I can’t tell you the number of calls that I’ve been on where I’ve seen sales reps with holes in their sweaters, stains on their clothes, coffee dripping off of their shirt, holes in their shoes, scuffed up shoes, mismatched socks, etc.  What that says to the buyer is you're not very successful as you lack the professionalism, poise and confidence that they expect.

Always be clean, always be modern, and always be professionally dressed for the market that you’re serving.

A top sales performer also has energy.  You have to look like you’re going to make it through the sales call without keeling over. That may sound harsh, but if you can't walk into the prospect’s office and carry on an animated conversation without either getting flushed or looking like you want to have a nap, then you can’t sell successfully.

So make sure that you’re in good enough shape, have enough energy, and are well-fed to carry on the sales calls because energy management is important in sales.  We have a tough job to do physically and mentally.  If you’re not in good shape and you don’t look confident and professional,  you won’t be successful.
