People always ask me whether salespeople are born, or they can be developed, and what I look for when I want to hire a top performing salesperson. First of all, selling is a learned behavior, and it's also one of those things that I look for when I'm hiring, and that is to be coachable. It's a learned behavior.

if people are coachable. And if people aren't coachable then they can't be good salespeople. So how do you test if someone is coachable?

Well, one, I always like to see if they participated in anything competitive, even in high school or in college. Did they play a sport or do something? Debate team even. It doesn't have to be varsity football. But something that would cause them to be coached today. Do they play tennis? Do they play pickleball? Do they play golf? Because if they're doing that in a competitive way, then they're likely to be coachable.

So what does that mean for you as a sales rep today who might need to see if they're coachable? Well, it means how do you prepare for your coaching calls? Are you prepared going in to your sales manager, either if it's a one on one or a group setting with questions. Do you go in with your arms crossed and say, I don't need to change? Or do you go in and say, I'm stuck in this area and I need help? I want to be better? Here's what I'm seeing with my data, my pipeline, my deals, and here are some ideas that I have - implement them? Or what do you think?

If you are coachable, you show signs of wanting to be willing to get help. And the more you prepare for those one on ones, the more coachable you will become, more coachable you will appear and the faster you will accelerate sales.
