You see, I was paid a draw against earnings of $2,000 per month whether I sold anything or not. So after selling NOTHING for 12 months, I was left owing the company $12,000. And this was in addition to my car payments, mortgage, and other bills mounting at home.
As you can imagine, I was quickly put onto a performance improvement plan where every activity was tracked measured and reviewed. While it was no fun, I quickly learned that tracking my activities and measuring their results (while humbling) was a great way to learn and improve. This was my first sales lesson: What gets measured get improved.
In addition. I was given a mentor. Now you may be wondering why I wasn’t fired…..and here’s the thing. Whether this was by accident or design, it what good news for me. My company held our managers accountable, financially accountable for their reps losses. Meaning, if I quit, or was fired before the $12k was paid off, my manager – Greg – would have to pay that money back! And I can tell you……he did not want to do that!. So I was given a mentor. Fred.
